Bout of Books 7.0 – Wrap Up

Bout of Books

Bout of Books 7.0 is over! I managed to meet all but one of my goals, which is super exciting for me. I am looking forward to returning to a more leisurely pace, however!

Time devoted to reading: I read both ways on my commute and before bed every weekday. I even managed to find good chunks of time on the weekend, which is rare for me. I did better on Sunday than Saturday, and still managed to sneak in a trip to the ballet Sunday afternoon.

The goals I accomplished:
  • Read five books total
  • Finished the two books I started prior to the readathon
  • Read at least 1,000 pages
  • Updated Twitter at least three times per day – well, I averaged 3/day

Books read:

  • Splintered by A.G. Howard
  • The Twelve by Justin Cronin
  • Phoenix Rising by Pip Ballantine and Tee Morris
  • Don’t Judge a Girl by Her Cover by Ally Carter
  • Only the Good Spy Young by Ally Carter

Total pages read: 1,614

Challenges completed: 0 – ran out of time for these

Thank you Amanda and Kelly and all the challenge hosts for a great Bout of Books 7.0! I had a great time, as always. Looking forward to 8.0!

Challenges:

Name Your Book Crack, hosted by Bookgoonie

The thing that drives my book addiction the hardest is a new release in a series. I feel compelled to preorder them, even if I’m woefully behind on my reading in that series. I feel like I have to keep up, and I Just. Have. To. Buy. the newest book so that I can say I have it. Somehow, in my mind, owning the most up to date book means I’m a true fan. I like to acquire them right away, so that when I am ready to sit down and catch up, the whole set is right there in my possession.

What this usually means, however, is that I buy the book and then feel no urge to read it. I own it, so it can sit on my shelf forever, right? I bought it, so I don’t have to keep thinking of it in my TBR list in my head. Once I own it, I don’t have to track it, or so it goes in my backwards mind. This is why I have TONS of books on my shelves and in my Kindle that are unread, while I plow through books at the library. I have the addictive urge to own books, but not necessarily to read them right away. It’s like I’m worried I’ll forget about them if I don’t run out and buy them right away. It drives my husband crazy, and makes me feel like a weirdo when people ask me my thoughts on the books on my shelves and I have to say I haven’t read them! Hee. So yes, the need to have the newest and shiniest books is my book crack.

1/13
Number of pages I’ve read today: 221
Total number of pages I’ve read: 1,253
Books read: The Athena Project (finished!), Insurgent and Beautiful Creatures
Today’s tweet: Finished another one for #boutofbooks! Just in time to watch the Globes, too!

Challenges:

New Year’s Resolutions, hosted by Ex Libris

Since I just finished Bared to You, I’ll pick Eva from that book. Her resolutions would be to buy new underwear (since Gideon keeps ripping them off), get a promotion at work (since she loves her job), and to not run away from her problems and fears (as she is wont to do).

Bout of Books 5.0 – Wrap Up

I survived Bout of Books 5.0! It was a great week of reading for me and I’m so glad I decided to participate. For those not in-the-know, here is the official Bout of Books blurb:

  • Finish 3 library books
  • Finish one Austen book (and start another)

I had a lot of fun, read way more this week than in any previous week this year, and am just happy to be enjoying my reading life. Thank you Amanda and Kelly and all the challenge hosts for a great Bout of Books 5.0!

Bout of Books 4.0 Wrap Up

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon

Last week I participated in Bout of Books 4.0. This was my third (second?) attempt at a read-a-thon, and once again life didn’t give me much help in my efforts. My sister’s baby decided she was good and ready to get out into the world, so mid-week I rushed to Nebraska to meet my new niece. (I tweeted a pic in case you missed it.) Then I had to rush back to Chicago to work all weekend protecting civil liberties during the NATO summit.

So, you know, pretty quiet week. 😉

Despite these hiccups, I actually managed to finish two books and start a third, which is a pretty impressive week for me all things considered. I’ve been reading soooo slooooowly this year, and this read-a-thon jump started my reading life a bit. Big thanks to Amanda at On a Book Bender, Kelly at Reading the Paranormal, Shirley at Creative Deeds, and Hannah at Once Upon a Time for running the event and keeping me entertained on Twitter!

My goals were to:
  • Read four books
  • Finish at least one physical book I already own
  • Catch up on my backlog of comics

Well, I read pages out of three different books, and that’s something. Although I didn’t finish a physical book, I at least started one (A Clash of Kings). I did not get to my comics – I brought a stack to work with me over the weekend hoping to tackle some during downtime, but there was no downtime to be had!

Books I finished:

  • Bourne by Lisa T. Bergren
  • Lover Avenged by J. R. Ward

Books I started but in no way came close to finishing:

  • A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin

The Game of Thrones books require lots of concentration from me. Martin has this way of writing that seems full of hidden puzzles that I must read carefully in order to ferret out. During one day’s roundtrip commute I can generally fly through 80-100 pages of a book. Martin’s book? Try 30 pages, if I’m lucky. I find myself re-reading the same passages over and over. Is it just me? Maybe this is why I don’t read more fantasy. I’m always terrified I’m missing things.

You can see a more detailed break-down of my reading week in my Bout of Books 4.0 update post. I know I may not have read anything close to what other people did, but the beauty of these read-a-thons is that they are to challenge yourself. I set pretty high goals (which frankly I didn’t think I’d meet anyway), but given the craziness of the last week I’m REALLY proud of myself. I got farther than I thought I would, and it got me excited about reading again.

And that’s always a good thing.

Bout of Books 2.0

It’s here! Bout of Books 2.0 is going on all week over at On a Book Bender and I’m going to try to actually follow through this time. I completed a short read-a-thon over the weekend that ended in an epic fail when I spent Sunday buying things and then having to update all of my technology through lengthy upgrade downloads, but that’s a story for another time.

I’ll be updating all week on this post. Here are my goals for the week:

1) Read at least three books start to finish.
2) Read at least one review request book.
3) Read at least one library book.

I hope to get more than that, but we’ll start conservatively since my weekend is mostly taken with Halloween activities.

I’m copying Amanda’s format for updates, but I’m changing it to tracking page count and not book count since I won’t be reading that many whole books.
